UtahSAINT Fall Conference 2007

Information Updated: October 8, 2007

"The Utah Security Advisory and Incident Network Team" (UtahSAINT) Conference is a Network Security and Best Practices conference for the State of Utah.  This conference focuses on the many aspects of network security,  current trends and tactics, network defenses, security tools and tools training, and a variety of other related topics and discussions.  The UtahSAINT Conference is held bi-annually at locations throughout the state of Utah, and is often supported and sponsored by the Utah Education Network, and many other state and private organizations.  The cost of the conference is purposely low, to enable institutions with tight budgets to afford to sent their technical staff.

Our next upcoming conference is on November 12-14th in Richfield, Utah.  This will be the 10th such production of this conference, and we encourage you to attend.  Topics of this conference will include: Network Security,  Developing secure practices, Incident Handling, Current Trends and Tactics, Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity, and much more.  Below are the conference Details:

Conference Costs and Registration:

Seating for the Fall Conference is limited, and seats will be filled on a first come first served basis.  We expect to fill the entire conference, so you are encouraged to register as early as possible.  Open registration for non UtahSAINT Members begins Monday October 8th at noon.  The cost to attend the conference will be $75/attendee.  Registration costs are designed to cover the basic expenses of the conference.  These costs include materials, equipment, food, venue rental, etc.   We believe that the value of the conference is how inexpensive it is to attend and gain industry relevant training and resources that could cost thousands of dollars otherwise.  We hope that this price encourages more people to attend that may not normally be able to attend such a training.

Conference Agenda:

In true UtahSAINT form, the Agenda is still being firmed up, but is filling up nicely.   For the latest agenda updates, please visit the website. http://conference.utahsaint.org/agenda/ Current Topics include: Kids in the Classroom (Tactics kids are using), Network Security Metrics,  Poor Man's ITIL (Network Best Practices), Network Security Procedures (USU), IP Visualization, Miscreant Trends and Tactics, FlowTools v3 Discussion,  Performing Network Assessments, Security Tools and Operations, Disaster Planning, and much more being planned.

Things to Bring:

In order for attendees to get the most out of the conference, much of the training will include hands-on experience. We recommend that you bring with you a Laptop computer to the conference. Wireless and Wired connections will be available during the conference, and UEN will be providing Internet access for the conference. Many of the tools and information you will be needing will be provided at the conference. It is highly recommended that you build a âœSterile Environment❠to run and experiment with these tools. VMWare is our current recommendation.

Additional Activities:

As always, we like to enrich the experience of the UtahSAINT conference with social gatherings and entertainment. We are still working on some of these plans, and expect them to be announced at the conference. Below are some of the planned activities.

After-Dark Labs:

On Tuesday November 13th in the Evening,  The UtahSAINT Group will be holding the first of what we hope to be a usual UtahSAINT tradition.  After-Dark Labs is a casual lab environment where you can receive informal training on some of the latest and powerful network security tools, and security performance monitors.  During the Fall Conference, the tools we will be covering will be:  NMap, Ethereal/Wireshark, Information Spiders, MetaSpl0it, and perhaps a few others as time permits.  We will provide a safe environment to test and learn these tools.   Instruction will be light, with more focus on using the tools and hands-on training.  If you would like to learn how to use these tools,  we encourage you to attend.

In order to attend,  please bring a laptop capable of running the latest version of the VMWare Player® or VMWare Workstation®.  All of the tools and information will be provided in a downloadable VMWare image available at the conference.

Richfield DTS Data Center Guided Tour:

On Monday evening, you are invited to join us for the DTS Data Center Tour.

Angus Experience:

Signup for this activity will occur at the Conference, but this includes a Social gathering for Dinner on Monday Evening.
