We will help you explore the world of space-based devices and their challenges.

In the Space Community will demonstrate the cybersecurity challenges of space-based satellites and the ground stations that communicate with them.

Come learn how to decode data being transmitted and attempt to send commands to the satellite and see its response on the display.  We will feature a large display with real-time images of a simulated satellite orbiting the earth.

Everything you need to know…

What we will teach:

The Space Community will introduce participants to the unique cybersecurity aspects of space-based systems. A simulated satellite will be running NASA’s Core Flight System software and a large display will show an image of the satellite orbiting the earth using NASA’s NOS3 flight simulation software.

As attendees interact with the satellite, they will be able to see its status and flight path on a large screen and watch it change in response to the commands they send. In addition to being introduced to flight software that runs on satellites in space, participants will learn about the CCSDS satellite transmission packet format as well as command and telemetry formats.

The staff hosting the community will walk attendees through a series of satellite hacks, specifically geared to allow attendees to learn how to:

  • Sniff and analyze telemetry data from the simulated satellite systems.
  • Modify commands sent to the satellite.
  • Decode video signals similar to what happened to SpaceX in 2021

What should I bring?

Attendees are not required to bring any physical equipment to learn, we will have some workstations available while interacting in the community.

For a better experience you may bring the following equipment when visiting the Space Community:

  • A Laptop with an OS Installed
    • Windows, MacOS, or Linux preferred.
